this is probably the largest haul i’ve ever put together, and it hasn’t even been that long since my last haul. (WHYYYYY?? HOW?????) yeah, it’s kind of embarrassing and i feel
books i bought, traded, won, or was gifted
i originally wasn’t going to buy the hardcover copy of LADY MIDNIGHT, by cassandra clare until it went on sale or until the paperback came out or just LATER, but then i saw it at costco the day it was released and… the dust jacket had a beautiful poster, and it also had a signed stamp, and ~everyone~ was sharing their pictures of it. so i caved and casually put it in my mom’s shopping cart. she didn’t comment on it so I’LL TAKE THAT AS A YES.
i also received my copy of THE WINNER’S KISS, by marie rutkoski from my pre-order on black friday. i waited forever for this and IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. i wasn’t intending on pre-ordering TELL ME THREE THINGS, by julie buxbaum, but i read waaaaay too many positive reviews and it seemed like something right up my alley.
jen from myriandinklings mentioned that she was going to one of the penguin teen tour stops and could get me some books signed. i sent her a copy of WINK POPPY MIDNIGHT, by april genevieve tucholke (the bibliophile academy book of the month!) and a paperback of AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, by sabaa tahir! she was kind enough to get these signed for me as well as send some swag and A BOW WITH BALLET DANCERS ON IT. ’twas very very cute and exciting to receive.
when i visited boston i bought two books: THE SOUND OF MUNICH, by suzanne nelson and BALLET STEPS, by anthony dufort. i remember a few people (specifically annie from the runaway reader) talking about how enjoyable and casual S.A.S.S. (students across the seven seas) books are, so when i saw this at brattle book shop, it seemed like a good idea to get it. BALLET STEPS is a gorgeous ballet dictionary that is super ~vintage~ and surprisingly accurate! i love strolling through the dance/ballet section at independent bookstores because there are always hidden gems you’ll find.
i was on the hunt for a hardcover copy of #GIRLBOSS, by sophia amoruso – it’s surprisingly difficult to find – and was happy to see it on the shelves of the strand bookstore. i also got a few postcards and another tote.
summer from butter my books managed to snag 50 copies of KINDRED SPIRITS, by rainbow rowell and asked if anyone wanted any, so she sent two to me! thank you, summer! i also won alexa from alexa loves books’ giveaway and got a few ARCs. ana from ana loves traded her ARC of THE DARKEST MINDS, by alexandra bracken and included some nice goodies. thanks, all!
things i bought that were not books
while on the east coast, i visited two stores that they didn’t have back home: muji and primark. (okay, there’s a muji store here but it takes like an hour drive) i’ve never been to primark before, but my sister was saying how much she loved the place while studying abroad in london. they opened their first store in boston so we decided to give it a visit. everything was super cheap and i ended up buying a hat, overalls, and an ironic “insta-famous” sweater that was actually kinda cute. when i visited muji, i got a pack of black gel pens, a pack of colorful gel pens, and an A5 notebook. these pens are my new FAVE and i can’t get enough of them.
i went on a mini redbubble shopping spree and got myself some hamilton and bookish stickers stickers, as well as a nifty notebook because HAMILTON and BOOKS. in an attempt to improve my makeup skillz, i bought contour, highlighting, and blush sticks from memebox, and a NYX jumbo eye shadow pencil. while visiting the mall with my friend, i got a nature republic EXO lip balm because it smells GLORIOUS and i love the color. i’m not a huge fan of the k-pop group (i don’t like them but i don’t not like them), so it’s kinda weird to have a cartoon of a singer outside of my lip balm. and finally, i ordered some business cards and i’m VERY PLEASED with how they turned out.
from publishers, authors, and other companies
i was lucky enough to recieve three bookish monthly subscribtion boxes last month, from muse monthly, uppercase, and bookly box! muse monthly‘s box included a copy of A GATHERING OF SHADOWS, by v.e. schwab and some fantastic cards and stickers related to the story. it also came with a huge bag of tea, so that was nice.
uppercase‘s box had a copy of REBEL OF THE SANDS, by alwyn hamilton and a signed book plate! there were also some other RotS goodies, a pin, and earrings. bookly box‘s box contained a copy of jonathan harvey’s THE GIRL WHO JUST APPEARED, as well as some sticky notes and tea bags. thanks to all these companies for sending the boxes to me!
the other day i got some pretty VERY exciting book mail from simon and schuster and that was an ARC of THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING, by morgan matson! i finished the book already and it’s SO FANTASTIC. not only is is one of my favorite books of this year, but it’s probably one of my favorite books ever. i also recieved a copy of THE LAST BOY AND GIRL IN THE WORLD, by siobhan vivian (which i will hopefully get around to reading soon) and HOT PTERODACTYL BOYFRIEND, by alan cumyan (which i’m still wary of starting because… A DINOSAUR BOYFRIEND? seems a bit too weird for my taste.) thank you thank you thank you, simon and schuster! alison malee also sent me a copy of her poetry novel entitled SHIFTING BONE and it looks gorgeous. this is my first poetry novel i’ve ever read so i’m excited to get to it!
harper collins was kind enough to send me a finished set of the DOROTHY MUST DIE series, by danielle paige. i actually bought the first book two years ago but i STILL haven’t gotten around to reading it. now that i have the whole series together, hopefully that’ll change?
HMH books sent me finished copies of some of their recent releases, as well as ARCs of these titles! they all seem reletively interesting so i hope i’ll be able to read these soon. books included:
- THIS RAGING LIGHT, by estelle laure
- THE ART OF NOT BREATHING, by sarah alexander
- INTO THE DIM, by janet b. taylor
- TELL THE WIND AND FIRE, by sarah rees brennan
bloomsbury sent me finished copies of WHEN WE COLLIDED, by emery lord (i’ve heard so many great things about this one) and THE GUTSY GIRL, by caroline paul (fun read with DRAWINGS in the pages!!). thank you, bloomsbury!
artia sent me ARCs of UP IN FLAMES, by abbi glines and ONE TRUE LOVES, by taylor jenkins reid. both of these are adult romance novels so i probably won’t get around to reading these soon, but thank you for sending them to me anyway! if anyone is interested in these, let me know and i’ll send it your way.
last but not least, st. martin’s press sent me a finished copy of MY MAD FAT DIARY, by rae earl. i’ve seen gif sets of the show on my tumblr dashboard for the past year, so i’m glad to finally have a copy of the book. thanks, st. martin’s press!
This is such a wonderful haul – you’re so lucky to have got so many lovely books! I’ve just finished the show of My Mad Fat Diary, and all I’ll say is – you NEED to watch it. It’s so so good! Even though it’s British, I think you can stream it on Hulu in America? I can’t wait to read the book series, because I’ve heard it’s just as good! I hope you enjoy #GIRLBOSS too. I haven’t read it yet, but I really want to because it looks like such an empowering and interesting read.
I can’t believe you don’t have Primark too! I shop there all the time!
Denise | The Bibliolater
thank you so much! i’ve yet to watch MY MAD FAT DIARY, but hopefully will get to it soon; everyone is saying good things so i’m excited! i actually finished #GIRLBOSS last month and loved it! it really was empowering and quite inspiring for me and my entrepreneurial self ahah. i hope you’ll get a chance to read it soon! primark is rarely found in the US (unfortunately) so i’ll either need to fly to the east coast/europe more often OR primark will need to build some stores around me. *sigh*
thanks for visiting my blog! xxx
I love that you casually put Lady Midnight in your mom’s cart hahaha I used to do that ALL the time. It was so great when she didn’t notice or begrudgingly agreed.
I also preordered Tell Me Three Things because GAH it sounds so great. And the cover makes me crave waffles.
OH MY LORD I could not be more jealous of One True Loves! I love TJR and am dying for that one. If you are looking to get rid of it or trade, I would be super interested 🙂
ahaha YES! it’s not too bad because my mom would either glare and say, “NO,” or she simply wouldn’t comment and i’d happily skip while she continues to stroll. it’d be the best!
i finished TELL ME THREE THINGS a week or so ago and was kiiiinda disappointed? i expected it to be better, but i hope it lives up to your expectations and you enjoy it!
and yes, i’d be happy to trade OTL! do you have any books up for trade, preferably with a similar or later release date? here’s my ARC wishlist: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/6784858?shelf=arc-wishlist and my regular wishlist: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/6784858-alexandra?shelf=wishlist ! i’m usually willing to trade ARCs for ARCs or HC for ARCs, and also open for suggestions. if you really don’t have anything to trade and know you’ll definitely read/review the book, i’ll be willing to send it to you <333
Omg awesome! I’ll email you 🙂
Big book haul!
thanks!!
I’ve actually never read a haul so long xD
Anyway, amazing post!! (As usual). I’m reaaaaaaaaally glad you loved The Unexpected Everything because it’s one of my most anticipated books of the year. I seriously CANNOT wait to read it!!
YAY! i felt pretty guilty for acquiring this many books because i specifically said, “I WON’T DO ANOTHER HAUL FOR A WHILE” and ended up having another one (probs twice as big) in a month. ooooops? and i’m glad i liked TUE because i was really scared it wouldn’t live up to my expectations! but it did, and i’m super happy about that and also SUPER EXCITED for you to read it! may will come around in no time!
sooooo many amazing things, the pictures are beautiful 🙂 The Darkest Minds series is fantastic, hopefully you’ll enjoy it! And that’s so much cool A Gathering of Shadows swag
thank you!! i actually read TDM a while ago and it’s one of my favorite books EVER (which is why i was searching for an ARC hehe). and it is! i haven’t read ADSOM or AGOS so hopefully the swag will make more sense after that. thanks for visiting my blog! xxx
THIS IS AN AMAZING HAUL!! My April haul was ridiculously large too…omg, let’s blame it on April in general okay?! OKAY. 😂 And omgggg The Dorothy Must Die series is amazing!! It’s really creepy and clever…although I 100% admit to being baffled why Yellow Brick War has a blue spine. Um. YELLOW Brick War??!? C’mon now, publishers, what are you doing…
Good luck devouring this mountain!! 😀
THANK YOU, CAIT! you’re making me feel much much better about the size of this haul because i was honestly feeling guilty for getting this many books when half of it wasn’t reaaaally my fault? let’s just blame it one april. SHOWERING ME WITH BOOKS, OKAY. good luck reading your stack! although i’m sure you’ll have no problem with your insane reading speeds ahaha.
and yes, WHAT ARE PUBS THINKING? yellow brick war – now that you mention it – should have a yellow spine. *head bang* although this blue is really nice…
Wow! You got so many amazing books and other things! Dream House has me super intrigued!
~Sara
thank you so much! i’m not sure what dream house is about, but it does sound mysterious and interesting. thanks for visiting my blog! xxx
Do the puns ever stop (I hope not)? I got Rebel of the Sands this month, actually a couple days ago, too! I splurged and bought it in hardcover for the #ReadWithBookish readalong.
That is super awesome that you found that vintage ballet book; it looks so beautiful. I have yet to read #GirlBoss but I know Grace @ Words Like Silver really liked it and it seems like a book my older sister would enjoy, so maybe I’ll buy one for her and for me (buddy readalong!).
I read and actually posted a review of The Last Boy And Girl in the World and unfortunately, I had to DNF it. It has such a beautiful cover, I’ll admit, but the plot and characters were so static and predictable! However, if you do end up reading it, I hope you love it a lot more than I did.
i have this fear that i’ll run out of haul puns; THEN what will my post titles be?? (xan has ANOTHER haul – version 34.0) oooo that sounds fun that you’re doing a readalong for rebel of the sands! i would (and probably should) but i don’t think i’ll be able to finish it with all the other titles i need to read this month.. *sigh*
i LOVE #girlboss! it’s kind of got a disconnected plotline (although it’s alright because it’s nonfiction) but other than that i love every aspect. it’s super inspiring and empowering so i’d definitely recommend buddy reading with your sister. after i finished the novel, i actually forced my sister to get it and read it! and she really did read it, which surprised me because she’s not a big reader.
i read your review for TLBAGITW (jeez that’s a long acronym) and was going to comment but i’m slowly catching up to that.. slowly but surely. i saw that you mentioned that the characters were meh and disconnected so i kinda moved it down my tbr. i think i’ll give it a try, but probably DNF or try again later if i don’t connect right away. thanks for visiting my blog, jess! xxx
Holy moly, this is a truly epic book haul Xan! I really enjoyed reading your wrap up posts and that LAdy Midnight paperback would definitely be worth it. I enjoyed the first Dorothy Must Die book, the second less and I’ve now got the 3rd book to read as well. Congrats on getting your book signed and winning a giveaway too, that’s amazing! Thanks for sharing lovely!
thanks, jeann!! i’m glad to hear that you liked the dorothy must die book! i keep meaning to read it and now that people are reminding me how good it is, maybe i’ll ACTUALLY pick it up. and yes, i’ve been really lucky this past month with the giveaway and signing 🙂 thanks for visiting my blog! xxx
Awesome post! I just reviewed The Art of Not Breathing. It was a good read. Hope you’ll enjoy it as well.
Happy reading!
Andie
thank you! i’ll try get to that one soon and will definitely check out your review. thanks for visiting my blog! xxx
WOW, that is a lot of books and bookish stuff! (Love the photographs by the way) A darker shade of magic is amazing, I can’t wait to read Rebel of the sands and I looooove Redbubble. This month I’ve placed two orders for stickers and they are so pretty. Happy reading 😀
thank you! i still need to read ADSOM (everyone keeps telling me and i REALLY want to get to it but these review copies!) and you just made me want to pick it up even more. redbubble is one of my favorite online shops EVER and i can never go on the site without adding a bajillion things to my cart. thanks for visiting my blog, mel! xxx
What a haul! I loved seeing all of your photos, and it’s fun to hear where you got all the books 🙂
thank you so much, alexa! <333
Yaaay you used the title! This is quite the haul; I love that insta-famous sweater. (it’s also especially fitting for you because it’s true 😉 )
thank you for inspiring me to use it! if it weren’t for that twitter conversation i had with you, this title would probably be something like “HAULP i got too many books” (lol i try) and noooo i’m hardly insta-famous! and besides, it’s more than just the numbers *flips hair* but the sweater IS really cute ahaha
Awww haha this is so cute & a great haul! (I love love love the aesthetic of your blog. I could just stare at it all day. *sighs*)
thank you so much, aubrey!! xxxx
I recently went to the Coolidge Bookstore in Boston and came out of it with five books! The thing is, I was there on vacation so my luggage is now suffering the consequence of my binge-book-buying. Haha! But I finished one of the books that I got recently, which is “Where’d You Go Bernadette?” It was AMAZING! I definitely recommend it to you if you love contemporary mystery with lots of amusing humour and witty dialogue. 🙂 Hope you can check out my blog as well; I love yours! https://www.theboywhoobviouslylived.blogspot.com
This is a huge haul. Publishers have been kind to you. You find the most adorable non bookish things as well.
