this post/giveaway is in paid partnership with Disney-Hyperion, celebrating the release of the Percy Jackson Coloring Book. all opinions my own.
while most children had j.k. rowling and harry potter, i had rick riordan and percy jackson. i distinctly remember visiting a friend’s house and asking to borrow a copy of The Lightning Thief. fast forward a few weeks: i’m begging my mom to let me get the PJO boxed set via scholastic book orders. fast forward another few weeks: i’m binge-ing these books and THERE’S NO GOING BACK. now, ten years later (!!!! NO JOKE I READ IT WHEN I WAS NINE), my feelings haven’t changed. i think it’s high time i share my love – especially with the Percy Jackson Coloring Book releasing recently:
it’s suitable for any and every age.
the PJO series is one that ANYONE CAN READ AND LOVE. probably. maybe there are people out there who find it “childish and immature” since they’re a pretentious pile of poo it’s written for a younger audience, BUT i firmly believe anyone can read and enjoy this series. it doesn’t matter if this is the first time you’re reading it or the fiftieth time. i will never grow tired of reading percy jackson.
diverse !! characters !! in !! children’s !! literature !!
rick riordan included diverse characters before they were considered a “thing.” percy struggles with ADHD and dyslexia, and always felt like the odd one out. BUT he later finds out these traits are not ones to be ashamed of; they help shape him as a person. this is so so so important to see in children’s literature. if kids only see white, able-bodied, cisgender characters in the stories they read, it can be disheartening. those who don’t identify themselves in that category don’t see themselves in media; those who do identify as that, don’t see their friends. BUUUUUUUT rick riordan includes many diverse characters throughout his novels and continues to include more and more. characters who are hispanic, gay, chinese, aromantic, black, etc. etc. etc. IT’S BEAUTIFUL.
it makes me want to learn about different myths and cultures.
these myths are rewritten in ways children can and WANT to understand. we learn about these paper people gods who turn humans into flowers and can’t relate. but the PJO world makes it so they’re not so foreign anymore. not only that, it makes me feel like we’re experiencing the myth as well. percy is riding his pegasus and I’M riding it with him. once we “experience” things like that – especially as kids – it makes it easier for people to be more open minded about different cultures and religions.
they’re so so so fun to read.
aside from all the ~important~ things this series represents, it’s just SO FUN TO READ. have you SEEN the chapter titles or table of contents? SO FUN. not to mention, percy is probably the sassiest character ever. THESE ARE SO GREAT.
and they make you FEEL SO MANY FEELINGS.
we have books that are “fun to read” and you also have books that are “emotionally traumatizing;” these books have the best of both worlds! it’s not as prominent in the Percy Jackon and the Olympians series, but the Heroes of Olympus series is painful. i don’t want to spoil anything, but i only need to say three words for those who read the books: Mark of Athena. 💀

Good review
if i was a demigod, i’d like to think my godly parent would be athena!
If I were a demigod, my parent would be either Poseidon or Athena
Percy Jackson was the first series I ever fangirled over. It was my first obsession and no one is willing to talk to me about Percy Jackson anymore because I will go on long rants about it. When I heard they were making a coloring book I got so excited because my coloring books based of novels are my favorite.
Ahhh this is so cool! I love all of rick riorden book!! My favorite series of his has to be Percy Jackson and the heroes of Olympus not the original one. Not sure why. I have taken like ten million quizzes in the past about who my godly parent is but I have always gotten different results. I want to say Athena or Artemis.
This was me too! I used to hate reading, but The Lightning Thief changed everything for me and helped me develop my love for books. Rick Riordan does an amazing job at creating captivating hilarious characters, and he also helped spur my interest with Greek mythology.
AHHH I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOUR REASONS! Another thing I may add however, Rick manages to write diverse characters but doesn’t make the diversity is all the characters have you get me? Like Hazel is Native American, but it’s not all of her; she’s so much more than being “that Native American”, while also showing us how Hazel respecting her cultures. It’s hard to explain but that’s what amaze me from Rick Riordan, especialy since it’s written for children!
I love this! I’ve always thought I was a daughter of Apollo, blessed by Athena 🙂
Ahh I love percy Jackson! Thanks so much for the giveaway! I think I would be a daughter of Athena. I feel like that’s what everybody says, but oh well. <3
I believe that I would be the daughter of either Poseidon or Zeus
percy jackson was my first fandom and i love all the characters so much!! if i were a demigod i think id be the daughter of either athena or aries
LOL I’d probably end up being Hades’ kid. 😀
I would be Hermes son
I think I would be the daughter of Athena!
The daughter of Athena!
“if you were a demigod, who do you think your godly parent would be?” If I were a demigod, I think my godly parent would be a full god. That’s math, right?
I think my godly parent would be Athena!
My husband would probably say I’m a daughter of Hades!
I would say Hades!

Oh my gosh I LOVE Percy Jackson!!! Rick Riordan is one of my favorite authors! I think that my parent would be Athena
I guess Zeus?
I LOVE everything Percy Jackson. Like 95 % of my Greek and Roman mythology knowledge I earned through these books!
And I would hope that Hera were my godly parent because she is just absolutely amazing (I mean she’s literally the QUEEEEEN and she’s just fab and hopefully a little kinder to me than to Percy and his friends :P). But I guess I’d also be pretty happy about Poseidon being my dad?
I would be the daughter of Athena
I think I would be the daughter of Hermes.
Athena and born just like she was, it would explain a lot ROTFL
