OH! Alexandra! (Xan? Have we cleared Xan as a nickname, yet?) I’ve been waiting for this post for SO LONG NOW!! You’re instagram is GORGEOUS (I stand by calling you a real-life version of Lara Jean Song – but you have BALLET, so your instagram account is even more perfect!). *Ahem. Gushing over* Thank you for the tips – if I can use them to make my bookstagram account look half as wonderous as yours, I’ll be a very happy bunny!

(yes, xan or xandra is a plausable nickname :)) THANK YOU SO MUCH! you have no idea how happy the lara jean reference makes me feel because she is goaaaals. i want to post a littttle bit more ballet pictures, but i also feel like they should be bookish related, which makes things hard. would people judge me if i posted pictures of myself dancing? AH WHO CARES I’LL DO IT ANYWAY. and i think your bookstagram is already gorgeous and beautiful! <333

This was such a great post Xandra! I have a bookstagram too (aloofbooks) and it’s really nice to see your tips for other bookstagrammers <3 I&#039ve actually been wanting to write a post about my favorite/top inspirational bookstagrammers, and now this just inspired me even more to write it. (spoiler alert: you might be in it….<333)

AHHH THIS POST IS SO HELPFUL. Your instagram is like, omg…it is so so amazing. YOU ARE JUST INCREDIBLE. *fangirls quietly in the corner* And I never understood why sometimes people put their hashtags in a comment instead of the post SO NOW I DO. Thank you for that! I might take that up….although I don’t get that many likes. hehe, yet. 😉 What I need to work on is being more social. gAH. I’m horrifically unsocial on instagram but I try. 😛

Wow! I’m pretty new to bookstagram, so this is going to help me out a ton! Your pictures are stunning and I love the way your posts are stuctures and how crisp and focused your photos are. I’m so excited for more blog posts♡

I absolutely love your Instagram account, you are one of the many accounts I follow that gave me so much envy and made me push myself to be more creative with my account. This is a great post filled with great information. It’s information I wish I had when I first started, but I eventually caught on. If you want my Instagram is captivatedbywords. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Karm says

OH, girl! This is so perfect… Your instagram is gorgeous and your blog is so cute! I love when I find people who do what I would want to do. Okay, let me get to the point- would you like to do an collab? if not I will understand, but please answer! Lots of hot cups of tea, and luv!! -Karma (@thirteensixtyone)

So much truth here. I was not a fan of using instagram to promote my blog. But it is so much fun now! There is so much inspiration out there and I am not afraid anymore to comment. I think I had a sort of confidence boost once I joined the community and saw that indeed “online strangers don’t always bite”. Though there are some trolls around, it is a very supporting community. I love experimenting with my instagram account and now I found what I want for mine. What I’ve seen is that a theme that reflects you on your posts do make a big difference in how the community interacts with you. 🙂 Mine aims at being friendly, open and sweet like I am offline. ♥ great post!

  8. Kaitlin @ Next Page Please! says

I think I just now realized that, I am not following you on Instagram! WHOOPS. Anyway, I really love your pictures and they’re just so beautiful. (If you could give me a few tips on how you edit your images, that would be great! ;D) Love all your tips and I thank you for sharing. 😉

I don’t have a bookish instagram, but I do follow a lot of bookish people. I’m tempted to make one although I’m not sure about my photography skills…

XAN I LOVE THIS POST. I’ve fallen off the Instagram bandwagon lately, because I didn’t realize what a commitment it would be! I have to say, I’m struggling a bit, just because I feel like I’m posting nice pictures and not getting followers, hahaha. THE STRUGGLE. I know I just need to be more consistent in my content, like you mentioned! Bookstagrammers who post multiple times in a day are just GOALS. How do they do it?!

I’m honestly surprised by how many people don’t comment on Instagram! I know a well-written comment on a picture will make my week. Hashtags are actually really important on Insta, since most people are always surfing hashtags! I don’t think it’s annoying when people post hashtags on another comment- it allows the caption to stand alone without a ton of hashtags as well.

Love this post, especially since you’re like an Instagram QUEEN. <3 Thanks for sharing!!

THANKS ANNEQAH!! i completely agree with you! i don’t think i’ve ever posted on my bookstagram more than once a day; it’s exhausting! to those people who manage… RESPECT. i’m sure your account will have tons of followers and likes in no time! <333

  11. Mel@thedailyprophecy says

I love bookish instagram (although I’m not fantastic at it) and I think you have given me some tips I can work with 🙂 It’s definitely important to remember that you must never post just for the sake of posting.

  12. Tamara @ Tamaraniac says

I’m so glad you made this post! Your instagram is definitely my favorite account. I strive for mine to have just a tiny fraction of the beauty that yours does. <3 I feel like a lot of the time I can be TOO perfectionistic about my pictures and then don&#039t post them for ages when they aren&#039t as relevant anymore… Ah well.

    • alexandra @ twirlingpages says

thank you so so so much, tamara!! i know the feeling! sometimes i stare at a decent picture for too long and end up deciding it’s not “instagram-worthy.” UGH. the picture was just fine until i started overthinking it! *sighs*

  13. Stephanie@ThesePaperHearts says

I love these tips! Although, I’ve kind of given up on instagram. I’m not very good at taking photos and it takes so much time for me to do it. Plus, it seems like everywhere in my house has bad lighting or no good backdrop for a book :/ I like scrolling through Instagram sometimes, but I don’t think it’s a social platform I really like using.

  14. Kyra @ Blog of a Bookaholic says

I love this post SO MUCH! And your Instagram is just goals, honestly. I started a bookstagram around a year and half ago but I never took it seriously and then this year I’ve been looking at all these other amazing bookstagram accounts and I’m like I WANT TO DO THAT, so these tips will definitely come in handy! THANK YOU <3

  15. Kristine says

I am a fan of your IG account, as well as your blog! I also love bookstagram, the community is so awesome, though there are times when (I agree with you) that my timeline/feed (if that’s what you call it?) is flooded with SFS or LFL or “too” much GA posts. | My IG account is @klreads 🙂

  16. Sophia says

I love this!! I always seem to be looking up ideas for bookstagram and tips. But UGH yes shoutouts!! They can be good, but usually there is way. Too. Many. I do like shouting out smaller accounts randomly. It’s kinda my thing. :)) @infinitbr

  17. Jilleighan Boivin says

Wow! Thank you! I never really thought about editing my photos but hopefully I will get better at it. Thank you for all of the tips. Honestly with the shoutout for a shoutout, I only do it about once a month, and sometimes I do see people doing more than once a week and it gets a little hectic, I know what you mean. My bookstagram is: @owl_bookishgirl

  18. Aradhna Kaur says

Great post! Definitely things I need to consider if I start posting more book photos on my instagram. I haven’t been planning on creating a separate book account for myself, but I do want to post more book photos and follow more bookish people…

  19. Vera says

These tips are very helpful! I just started a bookstagram acc and want to interact with other ‘small-ish’ accounts but everyone I see is so big and famous haha (I do have a regular editing acc with 600+ followers but getting followers on there was so much easier! (@verareads) my bookstagram is @sortingdays btw

  20. Maryum Noor says

I love all your tips and i ADORE your bookstagram! I used to post a lot of book pictures although the account was really my own personal account. But about a month or so ago I changed it into a bookstagram and am always thankful for some useful tips, (PS. My bookstagram is @_perplexingpages

I am new to bookstagram and I am loving it so far! I loooove your bookstagram and these tips are really useful! Right now my feed doesn’t have a theme since I am in the middle of moving so it is a bit more difficult to have consistent pictures (but they are all colorful). Do you think that once I settle down I should start a theme? P.S. My bookstagram is down.the.readinghole

I am new to bookstagram and i like it very much so far. I’m following your account and it is very lovely and i strive to have account like you have one day. These tip are very useful and i will be sure to use them in my account with the editing apps you told us about. ( also if you want to check my account even though its not at its greatest right now it is, Book_nerd_lover )

I’ve been on bookstagram for almost two years this july (wow) and I’m still getting the hang of it. Especially now with the new algorithm!

The don’t be stupid thing made me so happy lol. Some accounts have stolen my pics and it enrages me too.

At the moment I’m trying to find my own style and it’s taking a while but I think I’m getting there. I’m @foldedforests *winks back*

  24. Aimee Sumpton says

This was super helpful! I’ve recently started my instagram! I would love to build more of a following but it isn’t my biggest concern! I just love creating content and having fun getting to know other book lovers! Anyway, if you’re interested, my account is @readingsumpton 🙂 thanks! x
