i am an avid instagrammer. i was there when the social media first started out, anxiously waiting for it to be released onto android devices. i remember taking pictures with my phone, exporting it to my ipod touch, using the (then) cool instagram filters, and finally sharing it with the world. i didn’t know what i was getting myself into. oh, how utterly clueless i was. needless to say, i’ve acquired a few tips and tricks along the way.
socialize.
it’s a social media for goodness sake. interact with others! what most people forget to do is comment. sometimes, like-ing and following a person isn’t enough. once you take the time to comment on someone’s picture, they’ll probably take the time to comment back, thus the “friend making” process with be faster. i mean, you DO want to make friends, right? (don’t worry; internet people won’t bite. most of the time.)
however, i’d stay clear from simply commenting things like, “love your account! follow mine?” it’ll make it seem like you’re simply commenting for follows, which will probably have the opposite affect of what you’re looking for. be genuine about what you’re commenting about!
captions.
captions are (sometimes) just as important as the picture itself. instead of just writing, “books and tea!” have something more interesting to share. you could change that to, “hot tea and a hottie! the book is my boyfriend, OBVIOUSLY. i’m reading _____ and love these characters! <33” show your personality! i usually end my captions with a related question to create a conversation, making more people eager to comment and interact. another thing people tend to forget: check your spelling and grammar! i immediately judge a person if they mix up “your” and “you’re.” it could be a mistake, but doesn’t mean i won’t judge you.
hashtag.
it may make you look like you’re thirsty for likes and followers, but how ELSE are other people going to find your account? this is, in my opinion, the easiest and fastest way for others to find your account; i often scroll through tags to find accounts to follow! however, make sure you tag things that are relevant to your account. i’m not a huge fan of tags that are: #likeforlike or #follow because those won’t get to your target audience. sure, there may be people who end up following you, but they won’t stay for long because your account may not be something they’re interested in. nothing personal! for my bookstagram account i usually add tags that are along the lines of: #bookstagram, #books, #booklover, etc.
i also suggest adding tags in a separate comment instead of in the caption. this way, if more than x-amount of people comment, people wouldn’t be able to see your tags at first glance; they would need to click “more comments” in order to see them. it also makes you look less like you’re hungry for likes.
schedule your posts.
avoid posting your best pictures in the wee hours of the morning. why? no one will be able to see your picture because they’re probably sleeping! isn’t the whole purpose of sharing your picture, well, sharing? try scheduling your posts when you think people will be able to see it (i.e. morning, after work, noon, etc.). i also try to schedule my posts so i share something at least once a day. some people like to do more than one picture a day, or a picture every few days. just make sure it’s not posting five photos at once, then disappearing for the rest of the week.
quality content.
check every single picture you post. don’t just post something “for the sake of posting,” unless you don’t care much. all those accounts you follow and love? they probably critique and filter their photos repeatedly – i know i do. take multiple shots of what you’re planning on posting and choose your favorite. i suggest editing it with apps like snapseed, vsco cam, and afterlight. there are times when you don’t need a filter, but 9/10 times a filter will make a picture look nicer. also, try to post your picture at the highest quality possible. a nice picture doesn’t come out of thin air or luck; hard work and dedication is put into it.
avoid doing too many shout outs or giveaway posts.
you know what bothers me to no end? when an account i like is constantly doing “shout out for shout out” for more followers, then delete the post after a certain time. sure, it’s alright once in a while; and sure, it does get some exposure to more followers, BUT you will loose some genuine followers in the process – like me. i find these extremely annoying and i won’t hesitate to unfollow you right away; i’m sure i’m not the only who thinks this. it’s fine to do it once in a while, but try not to do it everyday.
don’t be stupid.
this tip seems laughable, but you’d be surprised at how many people don’t realize how many people are oblivious online. when i say, “don’t be stupid,” i actually mean, “don’t do stupid things,” like…
- reveal anything too personal, like your home address, phone number, etc.
- start a fight on someone’s picture or hate on their account
- steal another person’s picture without properly crediting or asking. (THIS IS SO IMPORTANT!) you’d be very surprised by how many people (including myself) get enraged when they find their picture on someone else’s account. this is the same as STEALING. please don’t steal.
- these are basic internet rules!
OH! Alexandra! (Xan? Have we cleared Xan as a nickname, yet?) I’ve been waiting for this post for SO LONG NOW!! You’re instagram is GORGEOUS (I stand by calling you a real-life version of Lara Jean Song – but you have BALLET, so your instagram account is even more perfect!). *Ahem. Gushing over* Thank you for the tips – if I can use them to make my bookstagram account look half as wonderous as yours, I’ll be a very happy bunny!
Beth x
(yes, xan or xandra is a plausable nickname :)) THANK YOU SO MUCH! you have no idea how happy the lara jean reference makes me feel because she is goaaaals. i want to post a littttle bit more ballet pictures, but i also feel like they should be bookish related, which makes things hard. would people judge me if i posted pictures of myself dancing? AH WHO CARES I’LL DO IT ANYWAY. and i think your bookstagram is already gorgeous and beautiful! <333
This was such a great post Xandra! I have a bookstagram too (aloofbooks) and it’s really nice to see your tips for other bookstagrammers <3 I've actually been wanting to write a post about my favorite/top inspirational bookstagrammers, and now this just inspired me even more to write it. (spoiler alert: you might be in it….<333)
–Silanur
thank you so so much!! it’s weird because i didn’t even know bookstagram was a thing until i joined it! i sincerely saw ONE ACCOUNT with book pictures and i was like I WANNA DO THAT TOO. and here i am hahaha
AHHH THIS POST IS SO HELPFUL. Your instagram is like, omg…it is so so amazing. YOU ARE JUST INCREDIBLE. *fangirls quietly in the corner* And I never understood why sometimes people put their hashtags in a comment instead of the post SO NOW I DO. Thank you for that! I might take that up….although I don’t get that many likes. hehe, yet. 😉 What I need to work on is being more social. gAH. I’m horrifically unsocial on instagram but I try. 😛
thank you so much, cait!! you may fangirl over my instagram account, but i seriously fangirl over your blog. (SERIOUSLY.) i’m glad some of these tips helped you! instagram can be tricky and exhausting at times. ugh SOCIALIZING.
Wow! I’m pretty new to bookstagram, so this is going to help me out a ton! Your pictures are stunning and I love the way your posts are stuctures and how crisp and focused your photos are. I’m so excited for more blog posts♡
~Ellie @pagesandpictures
i’m glad these tips will help! thank you so much for commenting and visiting my blog! <333
Hallo!! I really love your feed, chek my instagram @novellalw. Can u give me a trick and tips to make a #bookstagram hihi , ur feed is to cute
I absolutely love your Instagram account, you are one of the many accounts I follow that gave me so much envy and made me push myself to be more creative with my account. This is a great post filled with great information. It’s information I wish I had when I first started, but I eventually caught on. If you want my Instagram is captivatedbywords. I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
ahh i feel so honored! i’ve always wanted to inspire others to be more creative, and i guess bookstagram let that happen! thanks for visiting and commenting on my blog <33
OH, girl! This is so perfect… Your instagram is gorgeous and your blog is so cute! I love when I find people who do what I would want to do. Okay, let me get to the point- would you like to do an collab? if not I will understand, but please answer! Lots of hot cups of tea, and luv!! -Karma (@thirteensixtyone)
thank you! if you want to do you collab or something, please email me (twirlingpages@gmail.com) and specify what it covers so i could think about it. (:
So much truth here. I was not a fan of using instagram to promote my blog. But it is so much fun now! There is so much inspiration out there and I am not afraid anymore to comment. I think I had a sort of confidence boost once I joined the community and saw that indeed “online strangers don’t always bite”. Though there are some trolls around, it is a very supporting community. I love experimenting with my instagram account and now I found what I want for mine. What I’ve seen is that a theme that reflects you on your posts do make a big difference in how the community interacts with you. 🙂 Mine aims at being friendly, open and sweet like I am offline. ♥ great post!
isn’t the instagram community the best? well, i realized that the bookish community on all platforms are awesome. it really does make sharing photos and commenting so much more fun <33
I think I just now realized that, I am not following you on Instagram! WHOOPS. Anyway, I really love your pictures and they’re just so beautiful. (If you could give me a few tips on how you edit your images, that would be great! ;D) Love all your tips and I thank you for sharing. 😉
~Kaitin
thank you so much, kaitlin! although i’m sure your photos are already gorgeous, i can give you a few editing tips if you’d like 😉
I don’t have a bookish instagram, but I do follow a lot of bookish people. I’m tempted to make one although I’m not sure about my photography skills…
regardless of your photography skills, i think you should make one! the community is so nice and taking the pictures is a fun experience. it challenges me to be more artistic!
XAN I LOVE THIS POST. I’ve fallen off the Instagram bandwagon lately, because I didn’t realize what a commitment it would be! I have to say, I’m struggling a bit, just because I feel like I’m posting nice pictures and not getting followers, hahaha. THE STRUGGLE. I know I just need to be more consistent in my content, like you mentioned! Bookstagrammers who post multiple times in a day are just GOALS. How do they do it?!
I’m honestly surprised by how many people don’t comment on Instagram! I know a well-written comment on a picture will make my week. Hashtags are actually really important on Insta, since most people are always surfing hashtags! I don’t think it’s annoying when people post hashtags on another comment- it allows the caption to stand alone without a ton of hashtags as well.
Love this post, especially since you’re like an Instagram QUEEN. <3 Thanks for sharing!!

The Writing Hustle
My Not So Real Life
THANKS ANNEQAH!! i completely agree with you! i don’t think i’ve ever posted on my bookstagram more than once a day; it’s exhausting! to those people who manage… RESPECT. i’m sure your account will have tons of followers and likes in no time! <333
I love bookish instagram (although I’m not fantastic at it) and I think you have given me some tips I can work with 🙂 It’s definitely important to remember that you must never post just for the sake of posting.
right? i’ve seen so many people post bookish pictures just because they haven’t posted in a while and it makes me kinda sad. :// thanks for visiting my blog, mel!
I’m so glad you made this post! Your instagram is definitely my favorite account. I strive for mine to have just a tiny fraction of the beauty that yours does. <3 I feel like a lot of the time I can be TOO perfectionistic about my pictures and then don't post them for ages when they aren't as relevant anymore… Ah well.
thank you so so so much, tamara!! i know the feeling! sometimes i stare at a decent picture for too long and end up deciding it’s not “instagram-worthy.” UGH. the picture was just fine until i started overthinking it! *sighs*
I love these tips! Although, I’ve kind of given up on instagram. I’m not very good at taking photos and it takes so much time for me to do it. Plus, it seems like everywhere in my house has bad lighting or no good backdrop for a book :/ I like scrolling through Instagram sometimes, but I don’t think it’s a social platform I really like using.
These are all such fantasy tips! Definitely making friends should be the focus and being social and editing your photos definitely is rewarded. I love your photos btw! Going to follow your account.
I love this post SO MUCH! And your Instagram is just goals, honestly. I started a bookstagram around a year and half ago but I never took it seriously and then this year I’ve been looking at all these other amazing bookstagram accounts and I’m like I WANT TO DO THAT, so these tips will definitely come in handy! THANK YOU <3
I am a fan of your IG account, as well as your blog! I also love bookstagram, the community is so awesome, though there are times when (I agree with you) that my timeline/feed (if that’s what you call it?) is flooded with SFS or LFL or “too” much GA posts. | My IG account is @klreads 🙂
Glad to read this old post. I folow your IG and the pics are great. Mine is @thebooksatchel
I love this!! I always seem to be looking up ideas for bookstagram and tips. But UGH yes shoutouts!! They can be good, but usually there is way. Too. Many. I do like shouting out smaller accounts randomly. It’s kinda my thing. :)) @infinitbr
Wow! Thank you! I never really thought about editing my photos but hopefully I will get better at it. Thank you for all of the tips. Honestly with the shoutout for a shoutout, I only do it about once a month, and sometimes I do see people doing more than once a week and it gets a little hectic, I know what you mean. My bookstagram is: @owl_bookishgirl
Great post! Definitely things I need to consider if I start posting more book photos on my instagram. I haven’t been planning on creating a separate book account for myself, but I do want to post more book photos and follow more bookish people…
These tips are very helpful! I just started a bookstagram acc and want to interact with other ‘small-ish’ accounts but everyone I see is so big and famous haha (I do have a regular editing acc with 600+ followers but getting followers on there was so much easier! (@verareads) my bookstagram is @sortingdays btw
I love all your tips and i ADORE your bookstagram! I used to post a lot of book pictures although the account was really my own personal account. But about a month or so ago I changed it into a bookstagram and am always thankful for some useful tips, (PS. My bookstagram is @_perplexingpages
I am new to bookstagram and I am loving it so far! I loooove your bookstagram and these tips are really useful! Right now my feed doesn’t have a theme since I am in the middle of moving so it is a bit more difficult to have consistent pictures (but they are all colorful). Do you think that once I settle down I should start a theme? P.S. My bookstagram is down.the.readinghole
I am new to bookstagram and i like it very much so far. I’m following your account and it is very lovely and i strive to have account like you have one day. These tip are very useful and i will be sure to use them in my account with the editing apps you told us about. ( also if you want to check my account even though its not at its greatest right now it is, Book_nerd_lover )
I’ve been on bookstagram for almost two years this july (wow) and I’m still getting the hang of it. Especially now with the new algorithm!
The don’t be stupid thing made me so happy lol. Some accounts have stolen my pics and it enrages me too.
At the moment I’m trying to find my own style and it’s taking a while but I think I’m getting there. I’m @foldedforests *winks back*
This was super helpful! I’ve recently started my instagram! I would love to build more of a following but it isn’t my biggest concern! I just love creating content and having fun getting to know other book lovers! Anyway, if you’re interested, my account is @readingsumpton 🙂 thanks! x
