the art of growing up, ch 7 💌 we’re bringing back the art of growing up, ch 7 💌

we’re bringing back playyyyyy. 🧩 when was the last time you approached life with play rather than achievement? unfortunately, the last time for me was probably when i was a child.

as an adult, we usually only see play in hobbies or “rotting,” but what if we approached the rest of our lives with more play? this is what i’m trying to discover more of for the next few weeks. here’s to learning from our childhood selves. 🕺
iykyk 🕺🏻 my friends know that i am secretly ballet iykyk 🕺🏻 my friends know that i am secretly ballet’s biggest hater (read the rest before you attack ok) despite going to watch a ballet every week & dedicating 20 years to the craft.

so when good ol’ timmy shared his belief that “nobody cares” about ballet (& opera), i could see where he was getting at. (KEEP READING) when i was dancing, i felt like fewer and fewer people cared about these arts and went to the shows beyond nutcracker. it’s become more popular recently because of internet trends, but that doesn’t fundamentally change the issues within ballet – lack of funding, inclusivity, and accessibility – and it seems like a trend using its aesthetics rather than actually supporting the arts.

i quit the profession thinking that i “stopped caring” but the truth is that i cared way too much. i don’t mean this lightly when i say it was my entire life. i took every issue with the system and its expectations for dancers incredibly personally, as is the case with many art forms. this entrenchment can be very painful when you love the art but it seems like it doesn’t love you back. and to top it off, it seemed like the only people who wanted to watch were former dancers or niche classic enthusiasts.

HOWEVER, it is undeniable that i care for ballet. and that all my former ballet friends care for ballet. that whenever we hear tchaikovsky, we start humming along and waltzing and laughing. and that many others who know nothing about the art are now curious and interested. 🥹 and because of this interview, the ballet & classical community (and beyond!) are rising up and embracing these “dying” arts to prove that it is very much alive.

and from all of this, i hope that you get a ticket to a ballet and opera. 💞 (there are often discounted options!) 🩰⭐️✨💫
