After two intense, dead-end relationships, serial monogamist Alison finds herself confused, lonely, and drastically out of touch with the world of modern dating. Refusing to wallow, she signs up for a popular dating app and resolves to remain open-minded and optimistic as she explores the New York City singles' scene. With the click of a button, her adventures begin: On one date, she's dumped before the first kiss; on another, she dons full HAZMAT gear; she meets a tattooed folk singer turned investment banker, an undercover agent who tracks illegal exotic animals, and dozens of other colorful, captivating personalities.
Giving them each her signature "pants speech"--her pants aren't coming off unless she has a real connection with someone--she desperately wants to push past the awkward small-talk phase to find true love, but finding "the one" is starting to feel impossible. That is, until she meets Luke, who is sophisticated, funny, and not to mention, hot. Alison finds herself falling for Luke harder than any guy she's dated and finally letting her walls down, but will he stick around or move on to his next match?
Match Made in Manhattan is a fast-paced, contemporary story about the struggles of dating in the digital age. Replete with online profiles, witty dialogue, and a super-supportive group of female friends, this all-too-real and relatable debut novel will have readers laughing, crying, and rooting for Alison all the way to the end.
this is so, so, SO overdue, and i’m incredibly sorry to amanda (and to xan and the other cobloggers). i’ve been super mia recently—with college apps, school, and drama, i’ve had neither the time nor motivation to focus on blogging. but i’m finally back and here to stay (hopefully)! so, let’s get on to the book.
i received match made in manhattan months and months ago, and i actually read it pretty soon after i received it. the premise was interesting enough, especially since my friends and i had been messing around with dating apps last summer. i actually talked to a few really interesting people, but i didn’t actually try to date them (considering the fact that most of them didn’t actually live near me).
match made was a super fast read for me. i finished it in almost one sitting, and i was always curious to see who alison would meet next and what would happen. i liked that there were a lot of different guys, and that each one had a different personality and backstory. however, i wish some of the more important guys were more fleshed out, especially the guys she dated for a longer time. after a while, all the guys started to kinda blend together, and none of them really stuck out. they definitely could have been more unique and more REAL, which would have kept my attention much longer. even though i finished the book in a day, there were parts in the middle where i felt like the story dragged a little.
the other main problem for me was that some of the arcs were inconclusive. the story would suddenly switch from one guy to another guy, and i was left wondering what happened in between those stories. still, the plot was interesting, and i enjoyed seeing how she interacted with each new guy. i also liked the character development throughout the story and seeing how she learned to accept herself in the end.
overall, match made in manhattan is a really fun read, and i’d definitely recommend it!
