last week i went to book expo and book con in new york city!! i went last year and realized i didn’t read a lot of the books i picked up – even though many were among the highly-anticipated!!! list. so this year, i tried to be highly selective with the books i got and was semi-successful with a grand total of 15 books. here’s what i acquired:
the graphic novels!!!!!
1. mooncakes, by wendy xu & suzanne walker
one of the highlights of my haul!!! i didn’t know about this book until one of my friends, cam, told me about it and i was like ?!!! I NEED. for me, the graphic novels were truly the highlight/joy of my entire haul. wendy and suzy were also so so sweet and i love them very much. later at the expo, wendy asked if a few friends and i wanted some sketches and she drew sakura from cardcaptor sakura for me. i’m VERY EMO.
2. stargazing, by jen wang
ahhhh i was really excited for this one because i adored the princess and the dressmaker AND i heard stargazing had something to do with chinese food/culture? I’M SOLD.
3. are you listening, by tillie walden
SO. i actually got this at the fierce reads party, but wanted to share with all the graphic novels because graphic novels!!! of the fierce reads books, this is probably the one i’m most excited to read – and it’s probably because graphic novel!!! no regrets.
4. batman: nightwalker (graphic novel), by marie lu
i read this on the flight back to LA and loved it so so much! i didn’t end up reading the original novel by marie lu, but i’m glad i got to read this instead. the art was so beautiful and i really felt for batman. UGH.
5. dream daddy: a dad dating simulator
oh. my. gooooooooood. i don’t play the game dream daddy so i’m not that hardcore of a fan, but i saw the art and descriptions and just–
6. the tea dragon society, by katie o’neill
margot from oni press was raving about this and i’m so glad she gave me a copy because THE ART. IS SO CUTE. i,,,, have so much love. i don’t know what it’s about but at this point i don’t particularly care. all i know is DRAGONS. HAVING TEA. (i think) and CUTE ART.
the YA books
7. frankly in love, by david yoon
i wanted to get this at yallwest (and failed), then tried again at bookexpo (and failed again). BUT cam ended up giving me her copy and i’m very very grateful. a story following a korean-american from so-cal? if i recall correctly fake dating-ish??? nicola yoon’s husband? SOLDDDD.
8. the revolution of birdie randolph, by brandy colbert
i got this at the NOVL breakfast this year and got to listen to brandy talk about her writing and all that jazz. i
still haven’t read anything by brandy colbert, but have been meaning to!!! now that i have this copy, hopefully i’ll actually get around to reading it.
9. loki: where mischief lies, by mackenzi lee
we love marvel! and loki!! and dark characters!!! i didn’t know about this book until i head a bunch of friends anticipating it (as like 90% of this haul) and now i’m like WOW i didn’t know i needed this until i got it. apparently it’s a YA loki novel.
(well DUH) that’s all i really care for and know. I LOVE LOKI so that’s all that really matters.
10. shadow frost, by coco ma
i forgot who i was talking to BUT they introduced me to shadow frost! i don’t remember much about the plot, but what really stood out to me was that the author was born in 2000 aka she’s younger than me??!! i feel like, a failure.
books from the fierce reads party
11. rebel, by marie lu (sampler)
they didn’t have any ARCs of rebel so instead we got signed samplers!! i’m normally not a fan of samplers because they usually leave me craving the book even more but this one was cute and also, REBEL.
12. supernova, by marissa meyer (sampler)
i’m so hyped!!!! i loved renegades & can’t wait for this finale. but this is also a sampler. i probably will not be reading this because samplers!!!! the struggle. but i will say: this sample is super pretty and nice to touch.
13. lifestyle of gods and monsters, by emily roberson
was pitched as keeping up with the kardashians meets greek gods??? i’m
fcking SOLD. need i say more????? really, need i say more??
14. there will come a darkness, by
so i actually don’t remember much on what this was about BUT it gave me major six of crows vibes because there were six? seven? leads on the cover. also: the cover was gorgeous. also: i remembered the publicist kept saying how it was her favorite book of the year so!!!
15. the starless sea, by erin morgenstern
cam (BLESS HER) also gave me her copy of the starless sea and i– am def emo
(again). this was definitely one of the most coveted books of book expo – along with ninth house that nobody managed to get lmao – and i can’t believe i have it?!! in a way, i feel like i don’t deserve it because i’m not like, totally completely infatuated with the night circus and erin morgenstern BUT i did really like it. i’ve actually started this already and AM READY.
