Five Magical Things about Summer + a RICK RIORDAN GIVEAWAY

May 10, 2018

thank you to Disney-Hyperion for partnering with me on this blog post + providing the prizes for the giveaway!

summer is nearly here and you know what THAT means? more time to read!! among other things. it’s actually my least favorite season (THE HEAT), but there are some things i still love about it. SO

here are some things i feel embody summer in the best ways:

1. the books!

usually people have more time to read and relax during the summer season simply because they’re off from school. since i’m no longer studying or in school, it doesn’t reaaaaally change much for me BUT, i do have a bit more free time. ish. not really. i try to stay positive. summer is the time i actually TRY and make an effort to read more. usually it’s binge-ing series and sleeping far too late. maybe i’ll finally get around to reading all the recent rick riordan releases…

2. the clothes

i could live in shorts and dresses. i already do – living in los angeles – but summer is the season you can REALLY slip on shorts and a t-shirt and be on your way. as much as i love winter and the cold, the bulky jackets and layers do get annoying (and tiring!) after a while.

3. WATERMELON SEASON

all hail the best fruit ever!! i remember thinking to myself as a child, “if i could eat one thing for the rest of my life, it’d be watermelons.” there’s something so refreshingly SUMMER about watermelons and i love it. they’re small seeds of magic.

4. PEAK AVO SEASON

i feel like an annoying ~hipster californian~ when i say this but AVOCADOS ARE THE BEST. these are facts. and summer is when these veggies fruits are at their prime time which means 1) they’re super cheap and 2) super tasty. appreciate the little things, okay?

5. new beginnings

as much as i say i despise summer, it feels like important things always happen during this time of year. it’s when my birthday occurs. it anticipates new school years and work seasons (at least in ballet). new ideas always come (aka the birth of twirling pages, all those years ago). even though summer is in the middle of the year, it feels like the start of a new year. it’s a time to be a little lazy, a little daring, and a little magical. i just think of the phrase, “you’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.” that’s what summer feels like.

Since their mother's death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane.

One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a "research experiment" at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives.

Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them —Set— has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe - a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.
